Events August 2009
2009-08-08 18:00:00 - 2009-08-09 00:00:00 | OtherAfter-Wedding-Barbecue in Matsuo, August 8th 2009
Hi Everyone,This is an update for the barbecue on Saturday. The most important information first: due to the strict regulations of Kyoto city for BBQs at Kamogawa, we decided to move to another place (the only place where it is officially allowed to have BBQ in Kyoto). It is located very close to Hankyu Matsuo station in Arashiyama with a convenience store close-by:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=113005440639505681365.00045fd91eb050b283a4f&ll=35.001659,135.688995&spn=0.004227,0.009645&z=17
To get to Matsuo, it is best to take Hankyu to Katsura (on the Kyoto-Osaka line) and change to the Arashiyama line. You can also take any train/bus that goes to Arashiyama and walk from there (or take Hankyu back from Arashiyama to Matsuo, only one station). From Kyoto, it is also a nice and relatively short bike ride to Matsuo!
Meeting place and time: We propose that people meet at Hankyu Matsuo station on August 8th at 5:50pm (a train from Katsura arrives at 5:46pm). From there, you will be guided to the BBQ spot.
What to bring: please bring your own plate, cup, cutleries AND drinks (remember the convenience store in case you run out of drinks). We will collect a small donation for the BBQ, at maximum 1500 Yen (we will calculate the exact amount after shopping). Meat, vegetables, salad, bread and grill sauces will be provided. Since the BBQ spot is located on stones next to the river, you might want to bring a seat pad or something like that.
A few side notes:
(1) Matsuo shrine is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan and definitely worth a visit (but it closes before 5pm). It is located next to the train station.
(2) We will most likely go on a short hike during the day. We'll keep you informed about that in case you want to join us earlier and hike with us.
(3) The last train back from Matsuo leaves at 11:54pm with connections to Kyoto and Osaka.
(4) In the unlikely case of very bad weather forecast, we will change the plan and go to a nice restaurant in Kyoto downtown area (currently, it looks very good). For sudden showers, we can find shelter under the bridge next to the BBQ spot.
We are looking forward to welcoming you on Saturday - keep your fingers crossed that it won't rain.
Dominikus

Original event description:
As I announced at the last IOC meeting in July, we will have no official IOC club meeting in August. The next official meeting will be on September 12, 2009, at the usual place (See the upcoming announcement of the IOC meeting for details).
This year is the year of IOC weddings! I got married in June this year in Germany, and I want to celebrate with you and my wife Dani (who will be here in August) with a nice barbecue at Kamogawa in Kyoto.
Details about the exact place and time will be given later. To avoid any misunderstandings: No gifts, please. We will ask you to bring your own drinks and a small donation for the barbecue. Dominic has kindly agreed to help organize the barbecue, so you can also contact him if you need more information.
We need to know who will be coming by Monday, August 3rd to make sure that we have enough food for everyone. In case the weather is REALLY REALLY bad, we will find a nice restaurant in Kyoto.
We are looking forward to seeing you at Kamogawa!
Dani and Dominikus

Sawanobori in Shiga ken. Tuesday 18th August **
Tuesday 18th August **Sawanobori (Climbing mountain stream) in Shiga ken.
This is a repeat of the sawanobori event that I organised two years ago!
In a beautiful mountain stream in the Shiga countryside, 20 IOC members
waded, paddled, splashed and jumped from great heights, swam, floated ......
and laughed a lot! In fact, it was so much fun, that we went again last
year!
See photos at: http://iockansai.com/20070722SawanoboriShiga/
Read the article by Avinav and see more photos in the November 2007 edition
of the IOC newsletter "The Horse's Mouth" Volume 15 number 8.
You missed out? Don't worry! This summer you'll have another chance to
participate on 18th August!
In the hot and humid summer days in Japan, there is no better way to enjoy
the outdoors than in the cool water! So why not try this beginner sawanobori
event? We will stay cool by wading, swimming and climbing small waterfalls
up Myouodani stream (west of Hira san) with a professional sawanobori guide.
The course is only 2 km long, but promises to be full of action! No previous
experience needed.
Cost : 5,250 yen includes guide, wetsuit, wet jacket, life jacket (floating
vest), helmet, special shoes and insurance.
Need to take your own snacks, towel, swimwear (and waterproof camera!)
It is necessary to book the guide and equipment for this event, so please
let me know as soon as possible if you are interested. Deadline for signing
up for this event will be 18th July.
Thanks!
