IOC Kansai Club Meeting, July 11th, 2009
Dear all, this is a reminder about the upcoming IOC club meeting on Saturday, July 11th.We still need someone to present some exciting pictures and stories - how about details about a specific hike/adventure in the Japanese Alps? This could be helpful for those who plan to go there during the summer.
Additionally, Yumi (Yamada) will tell us about how to get cheap bus and train tickets.
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Dominikus

Hi!
On the long weekend July 18-20 (Monday is public holiday), I plan to do the 3-days circuit hike from Kamikochi to Yari and Hotaka with the challenging traverse of the Daikiretto.
Tentative plan:
- Overnight bus from Osaka/Kyoto to Kamikochi, departure Friday evening (July 17th). Depending on the number of participants and available seats on the bus, rental car is another option.
- Hiking from Saturday to Monday, departure from Kamikochi on Monday in the afternoon, return to Kyoto/Osaka in the evening on July 20th.
- Sleeping in tents and cooking by ourselves in order to avoid the crowded and expensive mountain huts
Since this will be a 3.5 to 4 star event, only members are allowed. A high level of fitness, confidence for hiking on a long and exposed ridge with strong winds, experience in hiking and easy climbing with heavy gear and full equipment are mandatory.
I also need a co-leader for this trip.
Because of the dangers of hiking the Daikiretto in bad weather, the hiking route will be changed (but still around Kamikochi) if the conditions are bad.
If you are interested, email me until July 27.

Omine - Misen River Course July 18-19 ***
Omine - Misen River Course July 18-19 ***Members Only
As Kevin introduced in his Hyakumeisan presentation during May monthly meeting, Misen river trail in Omine mountain range is one of the best and most beautiful variation trails in Kansai.
http://water-landscape.com /wp/archives/1443
I plan to hike along the trail to Misen on July 18-19 as below.
Anybody interested, please let me know.
Will organize this event if we have more than 4 people, but limited to 8 due to the challenging level of this trail. (should be 3-star event)
Requires physical strength and enough experience in mountain climbing.
Members only.
Tentative schedule:
Day 1
Meet at Kintetsu Shimoichiguchi station about 8:30
(1.5 hours from Umeda/2 hours from Kyoto)
Take a local bus to Kawaai (near Dorokawa onsen)
Enjoy the beautiful Misen river trail to the mountain shelter(Hirogawara Hinangoya). On the way to the shelter, we can spend some time in natural waterpools (swimming)
- stay overnight, 5-6 hours of mountaineering (not hiking!)
Day 2
Climb up to Misen and then go down to the town where we started. About 5-6 hours of hiking. Go to onsen if we have enough time to catch the last bus.
What to bring:
Sleeping bag, matress, swimwear, headlamp, rainwear, foods, waterbottle, etc. (regular set of gears for overnight hiking)
*Need to pack as small as possible.
Sign-up deadline: July 12 (Sun)
Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions about this event, too.

Rock climbing at Sengaku-iwa on Saturday, July 25
Rock climbing at Sengaku-iwa at Lake Biwa!We will meet at JR Otsu-kyo station (previously called Nishi-Otsu) at 9:00am. It's a 30min hike up to the rock climbing site, which offers nice views on Biwako.
Afterwards, I plan to go to the public swimming pool (or onsen if the other one is too crowded) and join Keiko in Osaka for visiting Yukari's gallery (and for having dinner).
Requirements:
- Members only. Signing up by email until Friday evening (9pm) is required.
- Participants need to bring ALL of the following equipment:
-- harness, climbing shoes, helmet, belay (ATC/Reverso or similar)
-- proper shoes for hiking up and down
-- enough water and food for the whole day (no possibility to buy something up there or to refill water)
-- towel and clothes to change if you want to join the visit of Yukari's gallery afterwards
-- optional: climbing rope (the more, the better)
Please note that I consider wearing a helmet as essential; therefore, I will not allow people to join without helmet.
