IOC monthly meeting April 2009 - membership sign-up and renewal

Hi all!

Why don't you come and see what's going on in IOC?
Our April monthly meeting will be held on April 11th at Nakanoshima koukaido, room number 4.

Google map:
http://maps.google.co.jp/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=ja&amp;msa=0&ll=34.693632,135.503936&spn=0.001114,0.001998&z=19&msid=103976029647435209190.0004653d27c3d4a3565e4

For members of the committee and for newcomers, from 18:00. For members, from 18:30. We will discuss upcoming events such as the hanami/spring party and bigger activities which need some more planning (i.e., multiple-day hikes in spring/summer/autumn this year). Further suggestions are welcome!

As appetizer for long-distance hiking, I will give a short presentation of one of the most famous long-distance hikes in Europe, the traverse of Corsica by foot.

IMPORTANT: from April 1st on, the membership renewal for 2009 is open. This meeting is a good occasion to do so. You can download the membership form as PDF from the web - it would be the easiest solution if you could fill the form beforehand and bring it to the meeting.

Please note that membership renewal is due until end of May. Members who miss that deadline will be removed from the active members database. Please understand that we need to do so in order to know how much money we can spend on equipment, IOC events, etc. We are planning to hold an IOC spring camping event in the beginning of June, for which we will give you more details at the meeting.

Winter sleep is over! Daisen-zan and its surroundings

Update: We have one spare seat in the car - if there is someone willing to join us, you are highly welcome. First come, first serve!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Hi everybody!

Spring is coming and Daisen-zan (Chugoku, near Akasaki/Yonago) is waiting for us on the weekend April 18th/19th. Depending on the number of participants, we will rent one or two cars (highway tolls are now incredibly low on weekends), drive to the village of Daisen. From there, we will go on a two-days hike to the summit and its surrounding areas.

Day 1: Hiking to the summit of Daisen. Depending on the snow and route conditions, it might be possible to continue further than the official hiking trail to the real summit - this is only an option. Daisen has a lot of snow in winter, so there might be still some left up there!
Tracking back on the same way for a while, we will
either camp or stay in one of the shelters halfway up on the mountain (depending on the participant's wishes and the shelters up there).

Day 2: We will continue to hike around Daisen until we reach a long ridge descending towards the north-east. We will follow that ridge down and return to the village in the afternoon.

Requirements:
- good shoes and warm/waterproof clothes
- sleeping bag and matlab
- basic level of fitness to do up to 1000m in altitude a day
- optional: light crampons might be necessary for those who intend to continue to the real summit of Daisen, although I cannot promise that it is possible. Please note that since we return on the same way, it is absolutely no must to do this side trip!

Please notify me until Friday evening if you are interested and what your preferences are (shelter, camping). I will then figure out whether we camp or stay in a shelter. Afterwards, you can cancel your participation if you are not happy with the decision.
