A day trip to Shosha-zan and Engyo-ji, December 5th, 2009

Hi!

Do you know the "Mt. Hiei Enryakuji Temple of the West"? If not (or even if you do), let's go there on Saturday, December 5th. Engyo-ji historically was one of the important Buddhist centers in Japan and is mostly left aside by people visiting Himeji. It is located a bit outside of the city on a small mountain, Shosha-zan.

The climb up to the temple area takes less than an hour and is very easy. The temple area itself hosts eight or more temples and a number of national treasures.

The plan is to take the train from Osaka to Himeji in the morning, hop on the bus to the base of Shosha-zan, climb to the top and visit the temple area. After returning to Himeji city, people can either visit the castle or the (in my opinion much more beautiful) garden next to it, or just hang out in the nice area around the castle.

What to bring:
- Light hiking shoes are ok for this hike
- Rain gear
- Lunch if you do not want to buy it on top of Shosha-zan

Signup by email until December 4th, 8pm.

Pre-Christmas-Party hike to Daimonji - December 12, 2009

Come and join a hike before the IOC Christmas party on Saturday, 12 Dec in Kyoto:

Meet at Kyoto/Demachiyanagi (Eizan-line exit at 10:00) -> Daimonji -> Nanzen-ji -> Pathway of Philosophy -> Sento at Hyakumanben (15:30-16:30, probably earlier), Catch train to Osaka from Demachiyanagi.

Of course we need to dress up for the Christmas party. If you like to bring more clothes, but you don't want to take them on the hike, you can take a extra bag for those and leave them in my house before we go on the hike. We will pass there on the way back before we go to the Sento.

I will send out a confirmation email the day before to all those who sign up. Pack a lunch to eat during the hike. Just in case - there is a nice Nigiri-Shop at Demachiyanagi. Please send me a mail and your contact information if you can come.

Please bring light hiking boots or good shoes, raingear, and a lunch, and your "dress-up" clothes if you join the IOC Christmas party after the hike.

If it is raining or strongly forecast to rain we will cancel.

Cheers,
Martina
