2009-11-01 10:00:00 - 2009-11-01 17:00:00 | Hiking *From Kibune to Kurama, November 1st
Hi!We will have a hike on Sunday November 1st. The hike will be to Kurama / Kibune, north of Kyoto. Kibune is a lovely old village built along a narrow valley with a river running through it. There's a mountain there with lots of little temples / shrines around it, and it's a nice hike up the mountain and around the surrounding villages. In early November the leaves will be turning, so we will be able to enjoy this famous Kansai sight! The hike is quite easy - less than one star! We will hike for about 3-4 hours, but only about 90 minutes of this is uphill. And once the hike is finished, we can all go to the onsen hot spring at Kurama for a nice, late-autumn soak.
If you want to join us, please contact Ian or Yukiko.
Hope to see you there!

IOC Kansai Club Meeting on November 14th, 2009
Hi all,This is another update on the coming IOC meeting next Saturday (November 14th). When you come to the old school in Umeda (see directions below), try to find the office room (front desk) on 1st floor. Our meeting room will be next to the office and NOT, as usual, in 2nd floor.
Also, there will be no announcement of the IOC meeting on the message board of the school. Don't be confused by this, just go to the place described above. I apologize for the confusion.
Cheers, Dominikus

Hi all!
Hope you enjoy hiking in the beautiful autumn colors. I would like to remind you about the coming IOC meeting on November 14th, as usual at the old school in Umeda (see below for directions).
This time, Darren will introduce hiking (and photographing, I guess) in the beautiful area of Kamikochi. He will talk about activities for all levels of mountaineering, from easy hiking and momiji watching to severe mountaineering on the Daikiretto.
Also, we will discuss the details of the Christmas party and the planned IOC-IAC skiing event in January/February next year.
The meeting starts at 6pm for newcomers and at 6:30pm for all members, respectively.
Hope to see many of you!

Kobe Rokko Mountain Traverse November 28th, 2009
SORRY - NO DATE CHANGE - STILL ON NOVEMBER 28, OF COURSE.3rd circular (November 15, 2009):
Hi!
The date of the Rokko Mountain traverse is coming closer. If you are on the list of tentative participants, I will contact you directly. If not and you are interested in joining, please read the first and second circular below carefully.
There exist several versions of the hike. Because of the long distance anyway and the short days, I decided to go for the slightly shorter, 42km (Marathon) version. It is still pretty tough and requires about 3300m in altitude up (and down again) in one day. See here: http://www62.tok2.com/home/rokkousanroku/jyuusou/crosssection.html
DEADLINE FOR SIGNING UP IS ON NOVEMBER 23RD.
All participants will receive detailed instructions and copies of the map after the deadline.
Looking forward to face that challenge with you!
Dominikus

2nd circular: Hi all!
This is an update on the planned Kobe-Takarazuka hike. Since we were not able to get tickets for the official event on November 23rd, we decided to do the same hike just a few days later, but on our own.
We will follow the same route along the mountains, but without the crowds around us (and without having to pay the registration fee). Apart from that, the requirements and conditions are the same as announced below. Please contact Emi and me if you want to participate if you did not do so yet.

1st, original circular: Hi all!
Every year in November, a whole bunch of crazy people set out for the Rokko Mountain Traverse. This hike is organized by Kobe city and requires signing up (and payment) beforehand. In turn, you will receive a leaflet where you can collect stamps at the various supply stations along the hike. There, you also get some food and drinks.
This sounds like a fairly easy afternoon walk for elderly hikers, doesn't it? Well, the hike starts at Suma and finishes at Takarazuka. Over a total of 56km, you will hike up and down along the Kobe Mountain range, making around 1500m in altitude.
Still interested??? Then contact Emi for details and for signing up! Application starts on September 1st and requires you to get an application form which you send by mail to the organizing committee. Luckily, Emi agreed on managing the application for a maximum of 5 people (which is the maximum number of forms one person can buy).
Important notes:
- the signup fee for this event is 1500Yen.
- application deadine with the city of Kobe is September 18th, but the hike is limited to 2000 people
THAT'S WHY THE IOC-INTERNAL APPLICATION DEADLINE IS AUGUST 31ST. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, CONTACT EMI UNTIL AUGUST 31ST ABOUT GETTING/FILLING THE FORM AND PAYING THE REGISTRATION FEE. SINCE SHE CAN ONLY APPLY FOR 5 PEOPLE, YOU HAVE TO BE QUICK OR DO THE REGISTRATION YOURSELF.
Limitations: in order to participate in this event, you have to be in very very good shape. 56 kilometers a day is quite a word. Also, the weather conditions can be very good or very bad. So, you need well-walked-in hiking boots and waterproof clothes, as well as a headlamp for the early start and late arrival. Please understand that we have to reject people who cannot comply to these requirements.
Further details about the hike will follow later or can be given by Emi, if necessary.

Konpira-san - November 29, 2009
Hi!Looking for a nice and easy hike in Kansai with the chance to catch some last photos of the autumn leaves? Then join me on Sunday, November 29th, for the hike from Ohara via Mt. Suitai to Konpira-san.
Konpira-san is a sacred place a little bit south-west of Ohara, where, according to the legend, a Kami touched the Earth. Ohara and the walk are beautiful in autumn. The hike is about three hours if we take it slowly.
Plan:
- Meet at Demachiyanagi station, Kyoto, in front of the entrance to Eizan railway at 10am. Queue up for the bus to Ohara at the bus stop close-by (I expect the bus to be packed since Ohara is famous for its autumn leaves)
- Hike from Ohara to Mt. Suitai and further up to Konpira-san. Have lunch at the top of the rock climbing site (nice views, easily accessible from the summit)
- Walk down to catch the bus to Kyoto
- Have some drinks and Falafel at Demachiyanagi station and relax at Kamo river or the nearby public bath
What to bring:
- Hiking boots (mandatory)
- Rain gear and warm clothes
- Lunch (if you arrive a bit earlier at Demachiyanagi: there is a nice Onigiri shop next to the station, as well as a 7/11)
- Onsen kit
How to signup:
- Send email until Thursday evening, November 26
In case of really bad weather, the hike might be canceled. Please check your emails on Sunday morning at 7am.
