Events September 2008
2008-09-06 11:00:00 - 2008-09-06 18:00:00 | Other *KOC picnic (see below for details ^_^
First KOC event : picnic in bampaku kinen koenThe new IOC branch, KOC (Kids Outdoor Club), is born as an initiative from… Me alone with support from Dominic ! Don’t worry the IOC membership also applies for the KIC. Having a kid oneself is not compulsory but loving them is.
Anyway as the heat appears to have calmed down, Naoki (4month ½) is going to introduce the club during a picnic. There will be a never ending speech from the KIC president (Naoki himself), lot’s of diapers and hopefully no crying.
We will try to save room next to the BBQ area so those who are meat addicted may be able to cook. I don’t know if it’s allowed to bring ones own BBQ.
Date : Saturday sept 6th OR Sunday September 7th depending on the weather. I would like to ask you to send me a short note by email if you are even remotely considering to attend so that I can get back to you with the final date on Friday.
Location : bampaku kinen koen (expo 70 commemoration park), kita Osaka. From Umeda take the midosuji line to Senri chuo then the Monorail for two stops and exit at bampaku kinen koen..
Meeting point and time : Tower of the sun (this weird monster looking statue at the south entrance of the park) 11 AM.
Cost : Entry to the park is Y250.
What to bring : your food and drinks, anything you need to spend a comfortable afternoon on the grass but remember a thunderstorm is always possible ! there is plenty of room so freesbies and other goodies are welcome. Good mood mandatory !
Bampaku kinen koen hosts a very interesting ethnology museum (Y420 ; there are detailed English explanatory pamphlets available). There is also a Japanese garden and a nearby onsen for those who feel like a bath (Y700, Oyuba).
See ya’

2008-09-13 08:00:00 - 2008-09-15 22:00:00 | Hiking ***1/2
Okuhodaka, September 13th to 15th.
Okuhodaka is the 3rd highest mountain in Japan and lies on the border between Gifu and Nagano and has stunning views of Kamikochi below. We will take an overnight bus to Matsumoto and then a bus to Kamikochi (One way approximately ¥10,000). For the return journey will take a bus to Hirayu, where we'll go to Hirayu no Mori Onsen (approx. ¥500) if we have enough time before catching a bus to Takayama and then to Osaka (One way approx. ¥10,000 total from Kamikochi).Regarding the hike, after we arrive in Kamikochi, we'll camp near the Takesawa hut about 3 hours north of the bus center. Climb to the top the next day and come back down the same day to our tent (approx. 8 hours of hiking); returning to Osaka the next day.
Participants will need to have the usual personal equipment: Hiking boots, Rucksack, Rain gear, Light warm clothing, Sleeping bag and pad, Eating utensils, Water bottle/bladder, Headlamp, Emergency equipment (small personal first aid pack, space blanket, whistle), and Snacks. We'll organise all cooking/shared equipment and breakfast/dinner as a group and share out equipment so that nobody has to carry too much.
We'll assess the weather conditions when we arrive and decide if we will proceed depending on conditions.
The hike is more tiring and more demanding than Fuji-san with some sections requiring a little bit of mountaineering skill and a lot of effort, especially if the weather is not good, so the number of participants will be limited. Those who snore heavily need not apply.
September 13th to 15th, leaving evening of September 12th and returning in the evening of September 15th. Members only: Limited number of participants. Anyone interested should e-mail me by August 28th.
