Ushimado Sea Kayaking Adventure July 12-13th

Ushimado Sea Kayaking Adventure July 12th and 13th!

This is a repeat of the popular Ushimado Kayak trip that we’ve done the past two years. For this trip we’ll meet our guides on Ushimado Island around noon on Saturday, then spend the afternoon kayaking around the islands of Seto inland sea. We can also swim and fish. In the late afternoon our guides will set up camp for us on the beach, and while we set up our tents, explore the island, and play in the water, they’ll fix us a great dinner. After dinner we’ll relax around the campfire. In the morning our guides will make breakfast, and then we’ll have a half day of kayaking and fun before returning to Ushimado, where we’ll have lunch and finish the tour around 4:00pm. Check out the July 2006 and 2007 editions of “The Horse’s Mouth” to read about previous years.

The kayaking is not too hard, and they have two-person kayaks, so beginners can partner with more experienced kayakers.

We’ll be camping on the beach, so we’ll need to make arrangements for tents.

Difficulty: 1.5 stars

Price: cost per person for guides, kayaks, and 3 meals: Y16,400 if we have 10 participants or
Y13,700 if we can get 15.

Transportation: If we can arrange a combination of drivers and/or rental vans, we’ll do that. Otherwise transportation will be about Y6,000 round trip from Osaka (including express trains to and from Okayama, bus, and ferry to Ushimado)

Bring: Tent, sleeping bag, light, swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, bug spray, raingear, Frisbees, balls, etc., musical instruments, alcohol and other drinks(our guides provide water)

Sign up deadline: June 16th. When you sign up, please tell us the following:
1. your level of kayaking experience
2. if you have a tent or can bring an IOC tent
3. if you have a car or can drive a rental van
4. if you’re a vegetarian
5. where you live

Restrictions and cancellations: This activity is open to non-members as well as members, but non-members need to pay in advance. Please don’t cancel. There will be cancellation fees for late cancellations. In the event of heavy rain, the event will be canceled. For light rain, we’ll go ahead and go (in previous years the rain didn’t bother us).

Bunagatake hike and camp

Meet Hira JR station (Shiga) at 10:00 am on Sunday, July 20th.

We'll hike up to Bunagadake and then back down to the old ski-jo in a circular route. Camp and then hike back down to Hira the next day.

Participants need to bring the following:

Tent/Bivy bag/Hammock
Sleeping bag
Stove, pans and fuel
Food and water for 2 days (There is a water source nearby, but it may require filtering/boiling)
Rain gear, warm clothing, sunglasses, etc. Don't forget a hat and gloves for the evening. No cotton!
Head lamp/Torch
Toilet paper (This is a wild camp after all)
Mosquito repellant might be needed.
Small personal first aid kit.

If anybody needs to borrow a tent or doesn't have a stove or any other equipment, let me know and we can book some of the club stuff or share appropriately.

Cost: Wild camping is free (there are no facilities the last time I checked - I have a very nice folding shovel that you can borrow for free).

If enough people want to club together to buy food, then maybe we can arrange something.

Rating: 2 stars because of the requirement for self-sufficiency, and the lack of facilities.
Members only.

No sign-up date, but those without sufficient clothing/equipment or ill-prepared will be turned away. Please let me know as far in advance as possible if you will join the event as we will leave shortly after meeting at 10:00 am: We won't wait if you haven't told me that you're coming. If the weather forecast is absolutely horrendous (e.g. storm/typhoon/blizzard/earthquake/godzilla/all the above) I will post a cancellation notice the day before, otherwise this will go ahead whatever the weather.

Please note that this event, like all IOC events, is AT YOUR OWN RISK.
