The Tateyama to Kamikochi Traverse! (Aug.30-Sep.7th)
*** ½ August 30th to September 7th*This is a repeat of the week-long Tateyama to Kamikochi traverse that Benoit and Yoshimi did back in July. I’m planning the same route with a few small changes. We’ll plan to eat and stay at the mountain huts a few times, and the return date is open. We’re planning on returning on the 7th of September, but may extend our trip for a day or two if we need or want to. In any case, this will be a challenging hike. Plan to carry a 15kg pack for a week of 8-10 hour hiking days.
Important note: I haven’t led a trip before, so I’m looking for a good co-leader and participants might need to be… flexible!
Schedule:
8/30: Take JR express from Osaka to Toyama, Dentetsu express to Tateyama station, cable car and bus to Murodo. Hike to Tsurugisawa base camp.
8/31: Climb Tsurugidake without packs.
(from here the schedule is still not determined, but this is a rough idea)
9/01: Hike to GoshikiGaHaraSanso through Dainichidake (Onanjiyama)
9/02: Hike to YakushiToge through YakushiDake
9/03: Hike to KurobegorooGoya through KurobegorooDake
9/04: Hike to YariDakeSanso
9/05: Hike to HotakaDakeSanso through ObamiDake, NakaDake, MinamiDake, KitahotakaDake and KarasawaDake (5 peaks over 3000m!)
9/06: Hike to Kamikochi through OkuHotakaDake and MaeHotakaDake. Then, we will take some rest at Kamikochi, have onsen, nice dinner, long sleep and leave by bus on the 7th back to Kyoto /Osaka.
Bring:
Good hiking boots, tent (I’m sharing mine with my friend), mattress and sleeping bag, rain gear, flashlight, small camera, cooking material and food for 7 days (light dried food, energy bars, pasta… nothing heavy…). Nighttime temperatures require a long-sleeve shirt and light fleece. For this kind of hike the weight of the backpack is fundamental: it should be as light as possible!
Cost:
Train, cable car and bus to Murodo: about 9,000yen
Camping: usually 500 yen / night
Staying at a mountain hut: 5000 yen (once or twice)
Eating at a mountain hut: 2000 yen (four or five times)
Staying one night in Kamikochi: 10,000+ yen
Bus from Kamikochi to Kyoto/Osaka: 8000 yen
