New Year s Myouken hiking, Sunday, Feb. 5th.

1.5 Stars.
Happy New Year Everyone!  Let's all welcome in 2006 by having a wonderful duck nabe party on Sun, Feb. 5th!  We'll be having it on top of the mountain near Myokenguchi station on the Nose.  This is the same place we went to every year which is just outside of Osaka.  The hike to the top is two hours.  Once we reach the top, we'll all work together to cook a wonderful nabe while enjoying great views, good company, and of course, wonderful Japanese "nihonshu!"

Please sing up with Junko at treasurer@iockansai.com
Deadline for signup: Feb.1st.  Non-members need to pay in advance, while members can pay the event fee on the day of the event.  As with all events, if you sign-up but then cancel after the deadline, you are still responsible for your event fee, because the club will pay the fee to the cooking center on Jan 9.

Cost :
1500 for members, and 2000 for nonmembers.  This includes all food and the entrance fee. (except for drinks. Soft drinks, beer and sake are purchasable on the top.

Title: New Year's Myouken hike and Nabe Party!  1.5 stars.

Meet: 10:00am at Myoukenguchi station on the Nose-dentetsu line.  To get to the Nose-dentetsu, take the Hankyu Takarazuka-line from Juso station, and
transfer to the Nose-dentetsu line at Hankyu Kawanishinoseguchi station.
We'll then hike the HATSUTANI trail (8.5 km) to the top of Mt. Myouken, where the Myouken mountain cooking center will have the food waiting for us.  At about 1pm, we'll fire up the coals, toss the veggies into the hotpots, and warm up from the inside!  After the merriment, we'll take the cable car (270yen) back down to the station, or walk back down if time allows.

Bring: warm winter clothes and sturdy shoes/boots!  The temperature on top of the mountain may drop to freezing, so be prepared!  The nabe will warm you up on the inside, but on the outside, a jacket, hat, gloves, scarf, and whatever else keeps you warm will be much appreciated by your body before the nabe is ready.  Also bring a bowl, eating utensils, cup or thermos, and plastic bag for your personal trash.  Alternatively, you can purchase a bowl, cup, and utensils for a minimal fee at the store.

Note to vegetarians: we'll have one vegetarian nabe as well!

From Hankyu Umeda station, there's a Takarazuka-bound rapid (kyuko) train that leaves at 9:00am, stops at Hankyu Juso station at 9:03am, and arrives at Hankyu Kawanishi Noseguchi at 9:22am.  From there, you can board the 9:26 Nose-dentetsu train, which arrives at Myoukenguchi at 9:53am.

Backcountry skiing in Nagano Sunday, Feb.19th

One and a half stars.

We'll take a day trip to the Togakushi highlands, a plateau northwest of Nagano city.  There, we'll ski cross-country, through woods of cedar and white birch, oak and fir, on the grounds of the Togakushi arboretum.  We'll cook lunch (nabe or fondue?) in a snow-covered meadow with a great view of the nearby snow-draped mountains, rising like a stark vertical wall of granite and ice from the edge of the meadow.  We'll then traverse rolling hills and small rivers on our way back.  Afterwards, we'll search for an onsen or sento and have dinner before boarding the bus back to Osaka.

This trip is good for anyone, whether or not you have skied cross-country or backcountry before.  The slopes are mild, and the snow is soft, making it a good place to learn.  I'm happy to teach everyone the basics, and it's pretty easy from there.

I plan to do this as a daytrip, via two consecutive overnight buses.  We'll board the first bus in Osaka right after the IOC meeting on Saturday night Feb 18 (it departs Osaka around 9:00pm).  We'll arrive at the Togakushi highland around 7:55am on Sunday morning.  There, we'll rent cross-country skiis, and spend the day exploring the highland.  In the evening, we'll return the skis, search for an onsen or sento and dinner, and then board another night bus at 7:05pm, which will arrive in Umeda around 6am, Monday morning, just in time for you (and me) to head directly to work.

Cost is 2500 yen for ski set rental and 10000 yen for round-trip bus fare.

If you wanna come, please let me know by Monday, Feb 13, so that I can make bus reservations.

Skiing/Snowboarding Trip, Hakodate-yama, Feb.25th-26th

Skiing/Snowboarding in Hakodateyama  &nbsp;     25th-26th February
“Hakodateyama Reloaded!” This event has replaced the Valentine’s trip due to accommodation problems for the previous weekend. If you missed out in January or last year you can read about what we got up and see some pictures by clicking on this link:
http://iockansai.com/newsletter/NewsletterMar2005.pdf

And this site will give you weather and other useful info about the resort:
http://www.snowjapan.com/e/resorts/resortdetail.php?resid=173

And finally this website has a map of the slopes (but it’s in Japanese only I’m afraid):
http://www.princehotels.co.jp/ski/hakodateyama/course.html

BASIC PLAN
From Omi-imazu station we will get the bus to the resort, ski/snowboard all day (there is hot food and snacks available at the resort, or you can bring your own lunch), head to minshuku (inn type accommodation) for dinner and drinks, then get some much needed kip before a second day on the slopes.

RAIL/LIFT PASS
If you can’t come for both days it’s close enough to go as a day trip. However, there is little difference in the cost of the one and two day rail/lift passes, so it’s best to pair up with someone else who is only going for the day. Any JR office should be able to give you a blue brochure with 3 snowmen on it with train times and prices.

OTHER INFORMATION
This is a one star event suitable for all abilities. If you’ve never skied/snowboarded before there are lessons available (in Japanese only). If you look at the map you can see there are green, red and black slopes (beginner, intermediate, advanced).

HOW TO SIGN UP
If you’d like to join us, or want more details please email or call Ronan. There is a limit of 15 people for the minshuku so let me know as soon as possible. Also the passes must be booked at least 4 days in advance if you want to take advantage of all the discounts available on ski rental, etc.
