Fuji-san! Hiking, Shizuoka, July 23-24th
Fuji-san sunrise climbThree stars
Come hike to the top of Japan with us in July! We値l start climbing on Saturday evening from Fujinomiya (southern side of the mountain) 5th station (altitude about 2500 m). As the night grows darker, we値l climb higher and higher, into the stars (or clouds, depending on the weather) lead by naught but our headlamps and the moonlight (as well as the thousands of signposts making sure we stay put on the trail). When tired, we値l refuge at the various mountain huts stacked along the mountain, and chill (literally?) near the summit (altitude about 3600 m) for the most popular outdoor sport in Japan: viewing the sunrise from the top of Fuji-san! After recovering our breath and spirits, we値l bound into the sun down the suna-bashiri (sand run) on the eastern slope of the mountain, to Gotemba 5th station (altitude about 2000 m). From there, we値l take a bus to the town of Gotemba, where we値l seek out some grub and an onsen before embarking on our journey back to Kansai.
Bring: headlamp or flashlight, rain/wind-proof shell/coat, sweater, warm hat and gloves, long pants, sturdy boots, bento for Saturday痴 lunch and dinner, onsen kit, change of clothes, sunscreen, sunglasses, snack food.

Meet :
If you plan to come with us via JR 18 ticket, meet on Saturday, July 23, 9:30am at JR Kyoto station central exit. If you want to take the shinkansen or get there another way via faster or more comfortable transportation, you can meet us at JR Fujinomiya station at 4:45pm, or at Fujinomiya new 5th station near the trailhead by 7pm
Cost :
Buses on the mountain will total about 4000yen. If you come via the JR 18 ticket with us, the total cost for trains will be about 7000yen/person round-trip. If you want us to organize your JR 18 ticket for you, please request your spot on the trip by July 10, and specify whether you want to start from Kyoto station (Junko will organize these tickets) or Sannomiya station (Jeremy will organize these). If you don稚 want us to reserve your JR 18 tickets, or decide about this trip after July 10, then you should purchase your own tickets. For folks starting from Osaka or Nara, we can put you in touch with each other so you can organize your own tickets as a group (cheaper that way).
