Mt. Ibuki hike Sunday, June 12th

Two and a half stars.

Let's go climb one of the Kansai areas's most beautiful yet exploited (it's mined for gravel) mountains: Ibuki-san, east of Lake Biwa in Shiga prefecture.  We'll climb the western face of this lone peak, starting at about 400m altitude, and summiting at the peak of 1377m, making it one of the highest mountains in Kansai, and earning it the title of hyaku-mei-zan, one of Japan's 100 "famous" mountains.  If the weather is clear, the topography around this stark summit should give us striking views over Lake Biwa, and maybe even Nagoya and Ise Bay.  If it's raining, we'll find ourselves in a wonderland of fog and clouds.

Meet: 9:35am at JR Nagahama station.  There's a shin-kai-soku (special rapid service) train that runs from Kobe station (7:34am), Sannomiya (7:38am), Osaka (7:59am), Kyoto (8:28am), Maibara (9:21am) to Nagahama (9:32am).  From Nagahama, we'll take the Kokoku bus (700) to Ibukiyama Tozanguchi (arriving around 10:30am).  The climb will take about 4 hours, and the descent another 2 and a half, getting us back down by around 5 pm.  From there we'll take the bus back to JR Nagahama station.

Bring: lunch, rain gear, sturdy hiking boots, water, sun screen.

Ride the Rockies, U.S.A., June 18th-26th

IOC members,
Aaron Bishop of the IAC in Tokyo is looking for a few brave men and women to "Ride the Rockies" in the U.S.A. this summer.  I've ridden with Aaron on many bike trips in Japan, and he's a great guy to ride with.  He's asked me to post this announcment about the ride below.  If you are interested, please contact him directly at...
<aaron.bishop@vodafone.com>

(From Aaron)
Hey Guys,
I am trying to get a group together from Japan to Ride the Rockies this year.  Probably there will only be a couple people from Japan, plus a couple
friends from the US.  Supposedly we will have a better chance in the lottery.  The problem is that you have to send me your signed applications by the end of the week, so I can get them in before the deadline.
Can you circulate this with the IOC for me?

CYCLISTS!
What do you think about riding your bike over and around some of the most beautiful mountains in the world?  Every year, about 2000 cyclists go to Colorado, USA, for a seven day, 400 mile (650km) ride through the mountains.  This is not mountain biking.  Each day, we will ride on paved roads, eat and drink at various rest stops, and party at night.
We will sleep in tents, but, you don't have to carry your tent- luggage transport is included in the ride fee.

You do need to be a strong cyclist, but don't let the mountains scare you.  If you are used to riding around Okutama and have some time for training rides around Tokyo, you should have no problem.  There is lots
of info about the route, equipment, etc on the official website for this ride
(http://www.ridetherockies.com/)
but feel free to ask me if you have any specific concerns. What do you think?

PROCESS
This ride is so popular that there is a lottery every year to get in.
We must submit our (paper) applications with payment by Feb 25 to be considered for the lottery.  I will pay for the ride up-front, but if anybody wants to cancel later there is a fee of 20USD, so I will ask that you pay me 2000yen now.  I also need you to send me a SIGNED application form by next Friday, Feb 18, so contact me ASAP!

FOOTNOTE
There are a few really famous cycling tours in the US, including the RAGBRAI (http://www.ragbrai.com/) and the Hotter'n Hell Hundred (http://www.hh100.org/)&nbsp; I have actually, only done the PACRACC (now dead) and Hilly Hundred (http://www.hillyhundred.org/) but my mom and
brother have done the Rockies.  Everyone that rides these organized tours raves about how much fun they are.  There is a party in each town each night.  You are surrounded by people who love cycling!  It is guaranteed to be a good time...
