Mt. Hiei Hike Saturday, April 2

Two stars.
We'll start near the shore of lake Biwa (70 m elevation) in Shiga Prefecture, and hike a rather steep incline up the eastern slope of Mt. Hiei.  Near the top (848 m), we'll explore some shrines that I've been told belong to the guardian that protects Kyoto (Japan's ancient capital) from the east (while Hiei's twin, Mt. Atago, protects it from the west).  We'll lunch near the top, and then descend the mountain's western slope into Kyoto.  Once in Kyoto, for those hikers up for it, we can look for a sento or onsen to clean off in, and then find dinner somewhere in town.

The hike should take 5 or 6 hours in total.  If the weather is nice, there'll be great views of Lake Biwa and the mountains around Kyoto.  If it's rainy, we'll see rivers and seas of clouds and mist all about us.  Maybe we'll see some plum or cherries in blossom as well.

Bring: rain gear, lunch, water, sturdy hiking boots, change of clothes (in case you get wet due to sweat, rain, or both).  Sturdy boots are essential, because falling rain or residual snow can cause the trail to be slippery.
