I'm not sure why this race is called a marathon because the longest distance is 10km, but it is in Nara and it does run past Kasuga Taisha Shrine and Todaiji. Infact it's a pretty good tourist route. The distances are 10km, 5km and "jogging route" (probably 2 or 3km), so anyone can take part. It doesn't matter if you have never run before,
just come along and try it...3km is not far and you only have to jog!
Plus the cut off times are 1hr35mins, 50mins, and 30mins respectively - so you could even walk the entire route in those times if you wanted to. However for the more competitive amongst you, the winning times for the 10k last year were around 33mins (men) and 43min (women)...something to aim towards maybe....
Cost for the 10km and 5km is 2500yen, for the jogging route it is 1500yen. The start times are 10am (5km), 10.55 am(jogging), 11am (10km). It would be good to get a group of IOC people doing it - we will go for lunch afterwards so it could be a bit of a social event too. If you're interested in trying running at all, this sounds like a
really good race to start.

Ice skating Sunday, Dec 11th
Come get into the wintertime spirit by coming ice-skating on Sunday afternoon, before the Christmas party! If you feel ambitious, skate in costume...Beginners and experienced folks are both welcome, as experienced members will try to help the beginners learn how to skate.
Unless you live nearby, you should bring your change of clothes for the Xmas party, if you plan to attend, and we can search for a sento to wash up in after skating and before the party.
Location: Kobe Port Island Sports Center.
Meet: Sunday, Dec 11, at 1:00pm at JR Sannomiya station, next to the entrance to the Portliner. If you want to come later, just take the Portliner to Shiminhiroba station, and look for the building that you can see on this website: http://www.kobe-psc.jp/top.html. This website contains a map as well.
Cost: 1300 per person, plus 300 for skate rental.

Christmas party Sunday Dec.11th
This year we will be holding the annual Christmas Dinner at the Kobe Regatta andAthletic Club, map can be found here-->

It will be a traditional festival party.
We will have traditional X'mas fare like turkey, plum pudding and mulled wine!
For you foreigners and Japanese who have lived abroad, if you miss any special
X'mas food and want to have it, you may suggest it. I will ask the restaurant
manager if they can make it.
Everyone who comes has to prepare a gift for gift exchange. The gift should be
at least 500 yen and not more than 2000 yen.
All are welcome to join this event. I am trying to get the party started at
5.30pm so those who live in Nara and Kyoto can also join in without any fuss.
Deadline for signing up 7th Dec Wednesday
NOTE!!! Members who signed up but did not turn up will have to pay the full fee
to cover the costs in preparation of the food.
Non-members must pay before the event to confirm if they are coming.
Dress code: Smart casual (Dresses, shirts and pants are ok, bermudas, jeans and
sandals are not!)

Snow covered Katsuragi-san hiking on Dec.18th
On Dec.17th, Suddenly snow falling and Katsuragi mountain range(border Nara and Osaka pref.) was change color white. I can see
white mountain and snow cloud. Tomorrow will nice snow playing
(hiking and sled) sunday. Meet at 9:30 JR OJI station (you can buy lunch)
and drive to Katsuragi-san rope way station (10:30) and hike to summit (12:30).
After take a lunch, lets enjoy sled playing(soriasobi).
There are some Ozen Yaki-imo(sweat potato) shop in the summit.
You need crampon or some protect slip shoes or showshoes.
I can let two crampon(four spike) for you.
If you can come by your car, please came and park super store around Oji.
Meet JR OJI Station south(central) exit in front of Mr.Dounut or inside.
Bring lunch, hot drink pot, cup, mountain shoes, gaiter, crampon, onsen kit.
Sled tool.
