IOC/IAC Hike & Camp in the Northern Japan Alps, Oct. 9th-11th

Autumn is a beautiful time in the Japan Alps, especially around the village of Kamikochi. The three day weekend in October is the perfect time to go before the snow starts to fall. It's also a great opportunity to get to know some of the members of the IAC, our sister club in Tokyo.
We'll take an overnight bus from Osaka on the Friday night(8th), arriving in Kamikochi early on the Saturday morning.
Anyone with their own transportation is welcome to meet us in Kamikochi on the Saturday morning.
Plan to climb Yake dake, an active volcano and the possibility to hike up Nishihodaka peak too.
We'll be camping one night at 2,450m, so warm gear is necessary.
Our second night will be spent in the Kamikochi valley. There will be a chance to explore this valley on Monday morning (national holiday!) before heading back to Osaka. Should be back in Osaka by 21:00 on Monday.
Good hiking equipment is essential.
A limited number of tents can be borrowed from the IOC (ask Estella)
Cost of the long weekend will be about 20,000 yen plus food.
This event is only open to IOC members with hiking and camping experience.
For further information please contact Estella (preferably by e-mail)
All those wishing to participate must reserve their place on the trip by Tuesday 21st September, in order to secure seats on the buses.

IOC Annual Momoi Campout and Meeting, Sat-Sun, Oct. 16-17

Greetings IOC campers!

Our annual Momoi club campout is exactly one month from today.  Everyone is really looking forward to what is always a really fun weekend.  Just to let you know, we’re hoping to get a 100% turnout this year.  If you haven’t been on an event for a while, this would be a good chance to see old friends and catch up with people.  It’s one of the biggest club events of the year, and it’s a great opportunity to meet most of the active members at one time.

Here is everything you need to know on how to sign-up and what the plan is for the IOC Momoi campout.

Date:
Saturday and Sunday, October 16th-17th

How To Sign-Up:
To sign-up for this event, please e-mail Shinobu Yoshioka (Special Events Coordinator) at <specialevents@kioc.org>.  THE DEADLINE FOR SIGN-UP IS SEPTEMBER 30TH.
When you sign up, please state whether you will come by cycling, hiking, or by your own means of transportation.  Also, you need to let us know if you would like to stay in the cabins, or if you are bringing your own tent.  The cost for the weekend will be approximately 3000 yen, or 2000 yen if you bring your own tent.  This will include all food and drinks, and the money will be collected at some point during the campout.

The General Plan:
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16TH
The Momoi Campsite is located in the mountains to the north of Kyoto city.  The IOC will travel in two groups to get to the site.

(The Bikers)
The leader for the bikers will be Jacquelyn Elliot.  After signing up for the event, Jacquelyn will contact you via e-mail.  She will tell you what time the bikers will meet.  The meeting place for the beginning of the bike ride will be Kokusaikaikan, the last stop on the northbound Kyoto subway line.

(The Hikers)
The leader for the hikers will be Kaori Asada.  All hikers will meet at Demachiyanagi Station, on the street-level, outside Exit #7, 12:30pm.  The hikers will then take a bus partway to Momoi.  They will then hike the rest of the way by trail to the campsite.

When you arrive at Momoi, some members of the IOC committee will be waiting to greet you.  The check-in time for our campsite is 4:00pm, so if your group is moving fast, take it easy.  After getting checked-in, we’ll have break-time, and assuming all goes as planned, we should have beer, snacks, and non-alcoholic drinks for everyone to enjoy.

The cooking time for dinner will start at 5:00pm.  We will break into teams so that all of the fire making and cooking goes smoothly and runs efficiently.  Please note, last year we had a shortage of cooking knives, so we’re asking members to please bring one if you have one so that we have enough this time.

We plan to eat sometime around 7:00pm.  Clean up will follow after that.

At 9:00pm we’ll start the campfire and everyone can relax for the rest of the evening until going to bed.  We will have two cabins to sleep in.  Futons and blankets will be provided for the cabins.  If you decide to sleep in your own tent, please bring your own sleeping bag and mat.

ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17TH

We will get up at 6:00am, cook breakfast at 6:30am, and eat breakfast around 7:00am.  Afterwards, we hope to get cleaned up by 8:30am.

At 9:00am, we will have our monthly meeting.

At 10:00am, we’ll pack up and do our final cleaning

At 11:00am, …
Hikers will do a fun and easy day hike lead by Kaori.

Bikers will do a bike ride lead by Jacquelyn.  Just so you’re warned, the route for this ride is pretty strenuous and shouldn’t be attempted by novice riders.

Things to bring:
A towel, a cup, chopsticks, shower kit, and rain gear
Also, bring Frisbees and any other sports equipment you think will be fun.

If you have special dietary needs, please let us know so that we can try to accommodate you.

That’s it!  Shinobu is looking forward to hearing from you!  Don’t forget to sign-up by September 30th.

See you at Momoi!

5-Day Cycling Tour in Northern Kyushu , Oct. 30th - Nov. 3rd

IOC Cyclists!
Aaron Bishop from the IAC and I are teaming up once again to organize a five-day cycling tour of Northern Kyushu from Oct. 30th – Nov. 3rd.  This is sure to be a challenging, yet spectacular autumn trip!  The exact details for the trip are still being worked out but as of now, we plan to have the IOC cyclists take a night ferry from Kobe, Rokko Island, on Friday, Oct. 29th, arriving in Oita the next morning.  We’ll meet up with the IAC cyclists in Oita and start the trip, which will be a circular route including Usa Shrine, a 40 km bike path, the Mt. Aso area (climb included), the Takachiho valley area, and the eastern coast back to Beppu hot springs.  We hope to spend the last day soaking in the hot springs in Beppu before heading home.  The IOC cyclists will take a night ferry back from Oita on Nov. 3rd and arrive early (like 5:30am) the next morning in Kobe, Rokko Island, on Nov. 4th.  You should be able to get to work on time from there.  We plan to campout for most of the trip, which means we’ll be carrying all of our camping gear and a lot of our food for the trip.  This will be a very physically demanding trip, and it is open to experienced cycling members only.  You’ll need to get permission from Aaron and I to join.  If you’re interested in coming, please contact me at <ifrank28@yahoo.com>;.  Cheers!  Ivan
