Ontake-san - joint IAC-IOC event, February 5th-7th, 2010

Hi!

This is a reminder about the upcoming Ontake-san skiing.snowshoeing event. We still have open places, so please sign up by sending an email to me. The deadline is January 20th. If you have questions regarding the event, do not hesitate to ask me.

Here is the original posting:

IAC and IOC are organizing a winter outdoors event at Ontake-san in Nagano - join us for two great days in the snow. We will stay at Kyukamura (http://www.ontake-kyukamura.com/), a lodge near one of the skiing areas at Ontake-san, Ontake2240. This location allows us to go downhill skiing, backcountry skiing, snow shoeing etc.

Overall plan:

- Friday: Arriving at Kyakamura from Kansai/Tokyo at about 10-11pm. For details about the transportation, see below.

- Saturday: Back-country skiers and snow-shoers will climb Ontake-san on Saturday, February 6th, either from the bottom of Ontake2240 or from Tanohara at the top of the Ontake2240 gondola. More relaxed snow-shoers can tour around the flat area Tanohara at the the top of the ski area with a nature guide the lodge has available for hire. Downhill skiiers/snowboarders can spend saturday carving the slopes. We'll all gather again in the evening at the lodge.

- Sunday: We can all go downhill skiing/snowboarding, before we have to leave for Tokyo/Kansai in the (late) afternoon.

Requirements/limitations:

- Participation: a maximum of 20 people can stay at Kyukamura from Friday to Sunday. The idea is to make it even, thus 10/10 from IAC/IOC. Participation is on a first-come-first-serve basis. If less than 10 people sign up from one of the clubs, we will open the places for members of the other club. This is a members-only event and we cannot accept cancellations. If you have to cancel, you either have to find replacement by yourself or pay the full charge for Kyakamura.

- Activities: Downhill skiing/snowboard, snowshoe, backcountry skiing. For downhill skiing or snowshoeing around Tanohara (the flat area at the top of the ski area), there is no avalanche danger, so you don't need avalanche equipment or training. Backcountry skiing and snowshoeing all the way to the summit, however, can be dangerous because of avalanches. Also, the ascent to the summit is quite hard, if starting from the very bottom. In order to take part in the backcountry or snowshoeing trip to the summit, you need to have avalanche rescue equipment (beacon, shovel, probe) and you should be able to use it, of course. For IOC, there will be an avalanche rescue instruction a week or two beforehand in Kansai area. For IAC, it is required that you already have this training.

Signup:

- The deadline for signing up is January 20, 2009, but please sign up as soon as possible to reserve your spot.  Also, if you're interested in snowshoeing or easy cross-country skiing around Tanohara at the top of the ski area, please sign up well in advance, so that we can arrange for equipment rental and a guide; the lodge has a Tanohara snowshoe guide for hire for 12000 yen, to be split amongst the participants.

Costs and Transportation:

- Kyakamura costs you 11500 Yen in total, including breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday only. IAC people will come by train and will be picked up by IOC folks or take taxis from the train station Kisofukushima. IOC people will come by rental car on Friday. The details need to be worked out once we know how many participants will come on which day and from which club.

- IAC people on Friday February 5 will take the 7pm Chuo-line special express Azusa from Shinjuku to Shiojiri, transfer to the Chuo-line local at Shiojiri, and arrive Kisofukushima at 10:32pm.  This costs about 7500 yen one way with a free-seat ticket.

- IOC People coming by rental car can expect costs of about 12000 Yen for trip from Kyoto and back (including fuel, highway toll fee, ...). In case there are people coming by train/bus from Kyoto, take the Shinkansen to Nagoya and the Limited Express Shinano to Kisofukushima. The costs for the train option are 8240/9000Yen (unreserved/reserved seat) one way. People arriving on Friday evening by train will be picked up by ourselves or share taxis with IAC.

- There is also an option to arrive on Saturday morning by taking the first trains from Kansai/Kanto. In this case, you have to arrange your taxis to Kyakamura and the skiing site independently (or come by your own car). Note that this will reduce your time for outdoor activities to Saturday afternoon and Sunday only.

By purchasing lift tickets together with the lodge fee, the skiing pass at Ontake 2240 (http://www.ontake.co.jp) is 3700 yen for 1day or 6900 yen for 2 days. It is possible to rent equipment (ski set about 3500Yen/day, snowboard set about 4500Yen/day). If you want to make use of this, please contact us well beforehand so that we can find out about eventual reservations etc.
